Other Strategies
Multi-modal Commutes
Combining several alternative commute modes can keep the commute interesting and effective. Dont have a transit stop near work or home? Try cycling to the bus or trail. You can also combine carpooling to a vanpool pick-up location or a transit stop. Or bicycle for the morning commute and carpool for the afternoon commute, reversing the commute modes for the next day.
Work Hour Management
Flextime, staggered work hours and compressed work weeks can help employees avoid the worst periods of traffic congestion and can increase employee satisfaction.
On-site services
On-site services offered by an employer encourage alternative transportation by reducing the need for mid-day and off-commute trips. Examples of on-site services that reduce trips include: ATMs, cafeterias or food service options, dry cleaning pick-up and delivery, postal services, photo developing pick up and delivery, and a heath club. If its not feasible to provide on-site services, encourage your employees to consider designating one or two errand days during the week. Non-errand days then become opportunities for commute alternative use.
